Position Overview:

A growing building materials supplier is seeking an experienced Outside Sales Representative to develop new business and manage contractor relationships within the Billings region. This role focuses on driving revenue growth through relationship-based sales, industry expertise, and strong project management throughout the construction lifecycle.

The Outside Sales Representative will be responsible for building and maintaining a portfolio of contractor clients, preparing bids and proposals, and supporting projects from the initial bid phase through completion. Success in this role requires strong industry relationships, a proactive sales approach, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

This position is ideal for a self-motivated sales professional who thrives on developing business, building long-term partnerships, and navigating the construction sales process from bid to project completion.

Location: Billings, MT (Regional Territory)

 

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop and grow relationships with contractors, builders, and construction professionals across the assigned territory
• Generate new business opportunities through prospecting, networking, and relationship development
• Prepare and present bids, quotes, and proposals for construction materials and related services
• Manage projects from bid stage through completion, ensuring strong communication with customers throughout the process
• Conduct job site visits to monitor project progress and maintain strong client relationships
• Coordinate orders, deliveries, and product availability with internal teams
• Ensure projects are executed within appropriate margin expectations
• Track project progress and maintain clear documentation of bids, quotes, and sales activity
• Stay informed on construction trends, project opportunities, and regional market conditions
• Represent the organization at industry events, builder meetings, and community functions
• Maintain consistent communication with internal teams to support smooth project execution and customer satisfaction

 

Work Environment:

• Territory-based role covering the Billings area.
• Combination of office work, client meetings, and job site visits
• Seasonal business cycle with heavier activity during peak construction months
• Independent sales role supported by internal administrative and operational teams

 

Qualifications:

• Minimum of three years of outside sales experience in building materials, lumber, or a related construction industry
• Demonstrated success in relationship-based sales and business development
• Ability to manage long sales cycles associated with construction projects
• Strong understanding of construction processes and project timelines
• Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills
• Ability to read construction plans or building layouts preferred
• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
• Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record

 

Preferred Qualifications:

• Existing relationships within the construction or contractor community
• Experience working with residential and commercial construction clients
• Familiarity with CRM platforms and sales tracking tools
• Background in construction, building materials, or related trades
